To introduce the family based activity of Ice Skating to the island. Location Victoria, Mahe Island, Seychelles,
Appointed and instructed by Al Maktoum royal family of the United Arab Emirate we were invited to take part in the project of installing the first synthetic ice skating rink on the island. As most of the local people have never seen or had the chance to ice skate, the option to add the rink to the seafront line up entertainment was a good one. The rink needed to be able to be used for public skating, teaching and as a tourist attraction.
The rink was to be designed for use in high temperature and humidity, to be able to expand and contract with the temperature fluctuation. It was decided to be installed within a steel frame building that was to be air conditioned for the comfort of the skaters. The synthetic ice rink was constructed of a size of 12x20 (240m2) which can hold 80 skaters at one time.
The ice rink is to run alongside over activates which have all been imported to the island. This forms a part of the newly developed site just on the outskirts the main city of Victoria. Other entertainment includes children’s play areas, carousals, arcade machines as well as food outlets and refreshments.
The rink was designed and manufactured in the UK before being packed and shipped via container (6 weeks) to the local port in Victoria. Upon arrival our installation team was ready to move the rink to its final location before assembling the barriers and installing the rink. Once complete the team then trained the local staff in the day to day operation.
